AI Voice Assistant Development FAQs
We hear these questions on almost every first call. Here are straight answers.
What is AI voice assistant development?
AI voice assistant development is the process of designing, building and launching software that holds real phone or in-app conversations with people. It combines speech recognition, a large language model, your business knowledge and a natural text-to-speech voice, then connects to your phone line, calendar and CRM so it can answer, book and route calls on its own.
How does an AI voice assistant work?
It works in a loop that repeats on every turn of the conversation. Speech-to-text turns the caller's words into text, a language model works out what they need and finds the answer in your knowledge base or tools, and text-to-speech speaks the reply. Good builds stream each step, so replies start in about a second and callers can interrupt at any time.
How long does it take to build an AI voice assistant?
A single-flow voice agent takes about [3 to 5 weeks] from discovery to launch. A multi-flow assistant with integrations takes [5 to 10 weeks], and an enterprise rollout with many languages and locations takes [3 to 6 months] or more. You get a test number to call early in the build, so you hear progress long before launch.
What's the difference between an AI voice agent and an IVR?
A traditional IVR makes callers press buttons through a fixed menu and only understands a few keywords. An AI voice agent lets callers say what they need in plain words, understands follow-up questions, answers from your knowledge and can take actions like booking or updating a record. Many businesses replace their IVR menu or put the voice agent in front of it.
Does an AI voice assistant sound robotic?
No. Modern neural voices sound natural, with real pacing, pauses and tone, and most callers find them easy to talk to. We still recommend the assistant says it's an AI at the start of the call, because honesty builds trust and some laws require it. What callers notice most is speed and accuracy, so that's where we focus.
Can it use my existing phone number and tools?
Yes. We connect to your current number through call forwarding or SIP, or set up a new number with providers like Twilio or Telnyx. The assistant then works with your calendar, CRM, help desk and knowledge base, such as Google Calendar, HubSpot, Salesforce or Zendesk, through ready connectors or custom APIs.
What languages and accents can it handle?
It can speak and understand [30+] languages, depending on the speech and voice providers we choose, and it handles common accents well. It can also switch language when the caller does. For less common languages or strong accents, we test several providers on recordings of your own callers and pick the one that understands them best.
What happens when the AI can't answer a question?
It never guesses. If a question falls outside your approved knowledge, it says so politely, offers to take a message, or transfers the call to a person with a short summary of what was said. You set the rules: which topics it handles alone, when it hands off, and who gets the call.
What is multi-tenant architecture, and do I need it?
Multi-tenant architecture means one codebase and infrastructure serve many customers, while each customer's data stays strictly separate. Almost every SaaS needs it, because it keeps hosting costs low and updates simple. We choose the right level of isolation, from row-level security to separate databases for enterprise clients.
Can you build an AI voice agent for outbound calls?
Yes. Outbound voice agents can follow up on leads, confirm appointments, send reminders and run surveys. Outbound calls have strict rules: in the US, the FCC treats AI voices as artificial under the TCPA, so you need prior consent. We build in consent checks, do-not-call lists, AI disclosure and calling-hour limits before any campaign goes live.
Is voice AI secure and compliant with HIPAA and GDPR?
It can be, if it's built that way. We encrypt call recordings and transcripts, mask personal details like card numbers, limit who can see call data and use providers that sign a BAA for healthcare. For GDPR, we keep data in the right region and support deletion requests. Formal certification of your business is done by your own auditor.
Should I use a platform like Vapi or Retell, or a custom build?
Platforms like Vapi and Retell are great for a fast first version, and we often start there to prove the idea. A custom build on open frameworks like LiveKit or Pipecat costs more upfront but gives you lower per-minute costs at scale, full control of your data and no lock-in. We recommend the right voice AI solution for your call volume.
Will I own the voice assistant and the call data?
Yes. You own 100% of the code, prompts, call flows, voice setup and call data. Accounts with the speech, AI and phone providers are set up in your name, so you're never locked in to us. We sign an NDA before your first detailed call and hand over full documentation at launch.
